The Tesla Cybercab launch is advancing to public rides in Austin, Texas, after the automaker introduced its purpose-built autonomous vehicle at an invitation-only event.

Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) said through its official Robotaxi account that public Cybercab rides would begin Friday at 5 p.m. Central Time. The company’s official Robotaxi page now presents Cybercab as part of its autonomous ride-hailing service.

Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle designed without a steering wheel or pedals. Tesla has positioned it as a dedicated platform for autonomous transportation rather than a conventional passenger vehicle adapted for ride-hailing.

Tesla Cybercab Launch Enters a Closely Watched Regulatory Phase

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reviewing the rollout, according to a September 4 report citing an agency spokesperson. Global Macro News has not independently verified the agency’s reported statement, and the review should not be interpreted as a finding that Tesla violated a safety rule.

The transition to public service is an important operational test for Tesla’s autonomous-driving strategy. Performance, fleet availability, passenger demand and the handling of unusual road conditions will influence how quickly the service can expand.

The rollout remains limited relative to Tesla’s broader ambitions, and regulatory requirements may differ across jurisdictions. Public availability in Austin does not guarantee rapid deployment elsewhere or establish the long-term economics of the Robotaxi business.
