Ascendis TransCon rights covering metabolic and cardiovascular diseases will return to the biotechnology company after its collaboration with Novo Nordisk ends. Ascendis Pharma (NASDAQ: ASND) will regain exclusive development, manufacturing and commercialization rights, including rights related to obesity.
The licenses reverting from Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) include once-monthly TransCon Semaglutide. Neither party will have continuing financial obligations to the other after the termination becomes effective, according to Ascendis.
Ascendis TransCon Rights Return Alongside Major Share Buyback
Ascendis plans to start multiple programs in rare and large metabolic and cardiovascular indications. The company intends to advance TransCon Semaglutide, an investigational long-acting prodrug of the GLP-1 receptor agonist semaglutide, for potential use in obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The board separately authorized the repurchase of up to $400 million of Ascendis ordinary shares. The company provides program and capital-allocation announcements through its official investor newsroom.
Regaining the Ascendis TransCon rights expands the company’s control over future development but also returns the associated costs and execution risks. The buyback authorization does not require Ascendis to spend the full amount, while the drug programs remain subject to clinical and regulatory uncertainty.
