The Waymo Tokyo robotaxi launch is being prepared for 2027 after Waymo, Nihon Kotsu and mobility platform GO formalized plans for an unmanned ride-hailing service. Waymo is owned by Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL).
Waymo vehicles have operated in Tokyo since 2025 under the supervision of trained Nihon Kotsu personnel. The testing has exposed the autonomous system to narrow neighborhood streets, dense crowds and other conditions specific to the Japanese capital.
Waymo Tokyo Robotaxi Launch Combines Three Operating Partners
The planned service will combine Waymo’s autonomous-driving technology, GO’s local mobility platform and customer reach, and Nihon Kotsu’s taxi operations. The companies intend to offer on-demand transportation around the clock and adapt the experience to local expectations.
Waymo outlined the commercial plan in its official company announcement. The service could help address transport labor shortages associated with Japan’s aging population, but the initial fleet size, coverage area and pricing were not disclosed.
The Waymo Tokyo robotaxi launch would represent an important international expansion beyond the company’s U.S. operations. Timing will depend on continued testing, regulatory approvals, fleet readiness and public acceptance of fully driverless vehicles.
