NASA SpaceX crew missions will expand by three flights under a $946 million contract modification announced Friday. The award covers Crew-15, Crew-16 and Crew-17, bringing the number of missions assigned to SpaceX under NASA’s Commercial Crew Transportation Capability contract to 17.
The firm-fixed-price modification covers ground operations, launch, in-orbit services, return and recovery, cargo transportation and lifeboat capability while the spacecraft is docked at the International Space Station. The performance period runs through 2030, with mission-readiness dates in 2027 and 2028.
NASA SpaceX Crew Missions Lift Contract Value
The additional flights raise the total value of SpaceX’s Commercial Crew contract to $5.92 billion, according to NASA’s official award announcement. SpaceX is privately held, so the award does not correspond to a publicly traded company ticker.
NASA said the change helps preserve regular access to the station while it maintains two commercial crew partners. SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and Dragon system was certified for astronaut transportation in November 2020. Each mission can carry as many as four astronauts along with critical cargo.
NASA’s current Crew-12 mission is already docked at the station. That operating history provides context for the follow-on award, although every future flight must still complete its own certification and readiness process.
Award Extends U.S. Human-Spaceflight Capacity
The contract modification follows a May notice that NASA intended to purchase additional missions. A sole-source award for these flights does not prevent the agency from seeking more transportation services later. The value also covers mission services rather than representing spacecraft revenue alone.
For the commercial-space sector, the NASA SpaceX crew missions reinforce the role of private launch providers in government human-spaceflight programs. Actual mission timing remains subject to readiness reviews, station scheduling and safety requirements, so the announced dates should be viewed as planning targets rather than guaranteed launch dates.
