Canada Metals Tariffs Reportedly Set to Fall to 25%

Canada metals tariffs on steel and aluminum are reportedly set to fall to 25% under a planned U.S. policy change, potentially easing a major source of trade friction between the two countries.

Bloomberg reported that the United States plans to reduce the tariff rate applied to Canadian steel and aluminum. A new presidential proclamation or implementation notice confirming the scope, effective date and covered tariff lines had not been identified at the time of writing, so the reported change should be treated as pending official confirmation.

The existing metals framework has several layers. An official June proclamation described a 50% duty on specified metal products, a 25% rate on certain derivative products and special treatment for qualifying Canadian and Mexican goods under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. That structure means the practical impact of any reduction will depend on the exact products and origin rules covered.

The metals duties are also distinct from separate tariffs imposed on other Canadian goods. A July White House fact sheet said those measures excluded products already subject to Section 232 tariffs, including steel and aluminum.

A confirmed reduction could lower costs for U.S. manufacturers that use Canadian metal while increasing competitive pressure on domestic producers. Market effects cannot be assessed until the administration publishes the legal text, product coverage and implementation timetable.
