Fervo Energy (Nasdaq: FRVO) and Alphabet’s Google (Nasdaq: GOOGL, GOOG) have signed a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement for electricity from the Cape Station enhanced geothermal project in Utah. The companies said the contracted power is intended to support a potential Google data center in the state when the project comes online.
The agreement is expected to support further development of Cape Station, which Fervo currently expects to begin operating in 2028. Google will buy around-the-clock, carbon-free electricity under the contract, while final plans for the associated data center remain subject to engineering work, local and state approvals, and commercial conditions.
Why the Fervo Google Geothermal Agreement Matters for Data Centers
The Fervo Google geothermal agreement is notable because it links a large technology customer directly with firm clean-power capacity. Unlike intermittent renewable generation, enhanced geothermal systems are designed to operate continuously, making the resource potentially useful for data centers that require stable electricity around the clock.
Fervo described the 396 MW contract as the world’s largest enhanced geothermal power purchase agreement to date. Google will also receive an option to expand its offtake by about 600 MW, which could bring the total commitment to nearly 1 GW by June 2030. That option is significant, but it does not guarantee that all of the additional capacity will be developed.
The deal builds on an existing relationship between the companies. Fervo’s Project Red commercial pilot began supplying the Nevada grid in 2023, including power used by Google data centers. A subsequent 115 MW arrangement with Google and NV Energy helped establish a structure intended to add geothermal power without shifting project costs to other utility customers.
Cape Station Expands Beyond Its Initial Phase
Cape Station is being expanded beyond an initial 100 MW phase through a modular development model. Fervo says its standardized GeoBlock approach could allow capacity to be added in stages as customer demand grows and project milestones are completed.
The agreement also highlights the increasingly direct relationship between data-center investment and new power generation. Artificial-intelligence infrastructure is raising demand for reliable electricity, while long grid-interconnection queues have made access to new capacity a strategic constraint for technology companies.
For investors, execution will depend on permitting, construction, financing and Fervo’s ability to deliver the expected output on schedule. If successful, however, the Fervo Google geothermal agreement would provide a large commercial test of enhanced geothermal technology and could strengthen its role in the power mix serving future computing infrastructure.
