IBM Quantum Hub at ETH Zurich to Install System Two

An IBM quantum hub established with Lockheed Martin at ETH Zurich plans to host Switzerland’s first IBM Quantum System Two. IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) created the initiative through an offset agreement with armasuisse, Switzerland’s federal defense procurement office.

The system is planned for the Swiss National Supercomputing Center in Lugano and will be operated by IBM. It is expected to use IBM’s Quantum Nighthawk processor, while ETH Zurich will provide expertise and resources to companies, startups, researchers and academic users.

The project is intended to support the development of algorithms, industrial use cases and technical expertise in Switzerland. It also extends cooperation between IBM and Lockheed Martin across quantum sensing, additive manufacturing, quantum computing and artificial intelligence.

IBM and ETH Zurich previously announced a 10-year research collaboration focused on foundational algorithms for the AI and quantum era. The planned hardware gives researchers a local system on which to explore how those methods could be applied.

The IBM quantum hub represents an infrastructure commitment rather than proof of near-term commercial advantage. Its economic value will depend on system availability, the quality of applications developed around it and whether participating organizations can move experimental work toward practical deployments.
