What to Watch Today Across Inflation and Interest Rates

August producer inflation is the day’s main U.S. data event ahead of Friday’s consumer-price report and next week’s Federal Reserve decision. The Bureau of Labor Statistics calendar confirms the PPI release for 8:30 a.m. ET. A hotter-than-expected reading could lift Treasury yields and the dollar while pressuring rate-sensitive equities. A softer result could support expectations for a less restrictive Fed path.

Initial jobless claims are due at the same time, with the consensus expectation around 205,000 compared with 206,000 previously. A large surprise could change the market’s view of labor conditions, although PPI is likely to drive the first reaction because inflation remains central to the Fed debate.

The ECB will publish its decision at 8:15 a.m. ET, followed by President Christine Lagarde’s press conference 30 minutes later. Markets expect a 25-basis-point rate increase, but that is a consensus forecast rather than a confirmed decision. The larger question is whether Lagarde signals that additional tightening may be needed as elevated oil prices increase inflation risks.

Housing and Energy Data Add to the Inflation Picture

August existing-home sales are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. ET, according to the National Association of Realtors’ release calendar. Economists expect an annualized pace near 3.98 million, down from 4.06 million previously. The report will offer a fresh indication of how elevated mortgage rates are affecting demand, prices and available inventory.

Natural gas storage figures follow at 10:30 a.m. ET. The EIA petroleum report is due at noon, later than usual because of the U.S. Labor Day holiday. Crude and refined-product inventories will be closely watched with Brent trading above $100 amid escalating Middle East tensions. Oil remains an important input into both headline inflation and inflation expectations.

Treasury Demand and Tech Earnings Close the Session

The Treasury will sell $22 billion of 30-year bonds at 1:00 p.m. ET. The auction is a significant test of demand at the long end of the yield curve following the recent global bond selloff. Weak bidding, a large yield tail or soft indirect demand could put renewed upward pressure on long-term yields, while a strong auction could provide some relief.

The Federal Reserve’s weekly H.4.1 balance-sheet report is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET. After the closing bell, Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) and Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE) are due to report results. Oracle’s update will be scrutinized for AI infrastructure demand, cloud growth and capital spending, while Adobe will provide another read on generative-AI monetization and enterprise software demand.

The priority sequence for what to watch today is PPI, the ECB decision and Lagarde’s guidance, the 30-year auction, oil inventories and the Oracle and Adobe reports. Because several releases arrive close together, investors should distinguish confirmed data and policy decisions from pre-release consensus estimates.
