BofA Market Target for S&P 500 Rises to 7,400

The BofA market target for the S&P 500 was raised to 7,400 from 7,100 for year-end, but strategist Savita Subramanian warned that U.S. equities appear overdue for a pullback. The revised target implied approximately 3% downside from the index level cited in the research.

BofA described the market as entering a seasonally weaker period. The firm noted that the S&P 500 had experienced only one decline of at least 5% during 2026, compared with a historical average of roughly three such pullbacks per year.

The strategist also pointed to inflation, Federal Reserve policy, earnings quality and credit risk as reasons for caution. The warning follows stronger monthly core inflation data and renewed market expectations that policymakers could keep financial conditions restrictive.

BofA’s observation that corrections of 10% or more have historically occurred about once per year is descriptive, not a forecast that one must happen. Market drawdowns are irregular, and historical frequency does not determine their timing or magnitude.

The BofA market target represents an analyst opinion rather than guaranteed index performance or individualized investment advice. Investors will need to compare the call with earnings revisions, valuations, bond yields and incoming economic data.
