Xos (NASDAQ: XOS) has secured a prototype contract from the U.S. Air Force to develop and deliver a deployable mobile charging solution for electrified support equipment and vehicles, marking the company’s entry into the defense market.

The award was made through the Air Force Global Strike Command Rapid Capabilities Division 2026 Showcase and will focus on adapting Xos’ mobile energy storage platform for military use.

The contract was structured as an Other Transaction Agreement, or OTA, a procurement mechanism commonly used by the U.S. government to accelerate development and testing of emerging technologies.

Under the agreement, Xos will develop a mobile charging system capable of supporting electrified equipment and vehicles in environments where fixed charging infrastructure may be unavailable or impractical.

The company said the award demonstrates growing demand for its mobile energy platform across multiple sectors, including commercial fleets, ports, municipalities and now national defense.

Defense Becomes New Growth Market for Xos

Xos CEO Dakota Semler described the Air Force award as a major strategic milestone for the company.

“This award marks a strategic inflection point for Xos,” Semler said.

He added that selection by the U.S. Air Force validates the company’s strategy of building a mobile energy platform that can operate reliably across demanding environments.

Xos said the defense market represents a significant new addressable opportunity, particularly because its systems are designed to deliver power without requiring permanent charging infrastructure.

Xos Highlights U.S. Manufacturing and Deployable Power

The company is positioning domestic design and manufacturing, operational reliability and infrastructure-independent charging as key advantages in defense applications.

Deployable charging systems could be particularly useful for military operations that require flexible energy access across dispersed or temporary locations.

Xos said the same platform architecture already used in commercial settings can be adapted for defense customers, potentially allowing the company to expand into new markets without developing an entirely separate technology stack.

Air Force Deal Expands Xos Beyond Commercial Fleets

Until now, Xos has primarily focused on commercial electric vehicles and related charging infrastructure.

The Air Force contract broadens that strategy by introducing the company to a customer base with different technical, logistical and mission requirements.

While financial terms of the award were not disclosed, the agreement gives Xos an opportunity to demonstrate its technology in a defense environment and potentially build a pathway toward additional government contracts.

The company said the deal reinforces its broader strategy of scaling one mobile energy platform across multiple industries where reliable, deployable power is increasingly important.
