Samsung Life Reportedly Seeks 15% Stake in Principal Financial

A reported Samsung Life Principal Financial stake could give the South Korean insurer a substantial position in one of the largest U.S. retirement and asset-management companies.

Samsung Life Insurance (KRX: 032830) is seeking to acquire a 15% equity interest in Principal Financial Group (Nasdaq: PFG), according to a report from the Korea Economic Daily. Neither company had issued an accessible public statement confirming negotiations or a proposed transaction at the time of writing.

The report did not explain whether Samsung Life would seek newly issued shares, purchase stock from existing holders or build the position through market transactions. It also did not provide an estimated purchase price, timetable or information about regulatory discussions.

Samsung Life Principal Financial Stake Remains Unconfirmed

A 15% holding would represent a meaningful strategic investment and could require regulatory review depending on the transaction structure. It could also create questions about governance rights, commercial partnerships and Samsung Life’s longer-term intentions toward Principal Financial.

Keefe, Bruyette & Woods raised its Principal Financial price target to $117 from $112 while retaining a Market Perform rating after reviewing the report. The firm said the shares could react positively, but emphasized that the reported stake purchase was not described as a completed deal. The target and rating represent the analyst’s opinion, not company guidance.

Until Samsung Life or Principal Financial provides confirmation, the potential investment should be treated as an attributed media claim rather than an agreed transaction. The lack of detail about financing and execution also makes it impossible to determine the likely effect on either company’s shareholders.
