Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft is simplifying its Copilot lineup by combining key functionality from the consumer Copilot app with the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, creating a more unified experience across personal, work and school accounts.

The company said the updated Copilot app will bring together Copilot chat and image creation with direct access to Microsoft 365 apps, files and connected services.

Users will be able to sign in with personal, work or school accounts, while Microsoft emphasized that work and personal data will remain separate and existing organizational security and compliance controls will continue to apply.

Copilot App to Add Direct Access to Microsoft 365 Apps

The updated Copilot app will provide direct access to Word, Excel, Outlook and other Microsoft 365 applications, allowing users to move more easily between AI-assisted conversations and productivity workflows.

Users will also be able to connect Copilot to services including email, calendars and cloud storage, giving the assistant more context for both professional and personal tasks.

Microsoft said the goal is to create a more cohesive experience rather than maintaining separate apps with overlapping functionality.

Microsoft 365 Subscribers to Get Higher AI Limits

The core Copilot experience will remain available for free, including chat, image creation and file uploads, subject to capacity and usage limits.

Microsoft 365 subscribers will receive access to higher usage limits, advanced AI capabilities, leading models and features designed for more complex work.

Paid subscribers will also be able to use agents and tackle more demanding multi-step tasks.

Users who reach free-tier limits will have the option to upgrade to a Microsoft 365 plan or wait until capacity becomes available again.

Podcasts, Deep Research and Group Chat Are Being Retired

As part of the restructuring, Microsoft is also removing several existing Copilot features.

Podcasts, Deep Research, Group chat and other features are being retired as the company consolidates the product around a narrower set of core AI and Microsoft 365 capabilities.

The changes indicate that Microsoft is prioritizing tighter integration between Copilot and its productivity ecosystem over maintaining a broad collection of standalone consumer features.

Existing Copilot Users Will Be Moved to the Updated App

Users currently accessing Microsoft Copilot with a personal Microsoft account, Google sign-in or Apple sign-in will be migrated to the updated Copilot app, with existing chats and content carried over.

Personal-account users of the Microsoft 365 Copilot app will see smaller navigation changes and an updated Copilot icon, while Copilot chat will become available to all users.

People who currently use both Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot with a personal account will have their chats and content combined into a single updated app.

Microsoft said chats, content and data will continue to remain separated between different account types.

Microsoft Pushes Toward a Single Copilot Experience

The consolidation reflects Microsoft’s broader effort to reduce fragmentation across its AI products and make Copilot a central interface for both generative AI and Microsoft 365 productivity tools.

By bringing chat, content creation, files, email, calendars and Office apps into a single experience, Microsoft is positioning Copilot less as a standalone chatbot and more as an integrated productivity layer across its software ecosystem.
