CME FX open interest reached 4,410,167 futures and options contracts on Sept. 4, setting a record for the exchange’s currency derivatives complex, CME Group (NASDAQ: CME) said.

The total exceeded the prior peak of 4,269,622 contracts recorded on June 11, according to CME Group’s announcement.

CME said the number of large open-interest holders in its FX futures rose to 1,446, an all-time high, citing the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Aug. 25 Commitments of Traders report. The exchange also said asset managers’ FX futures notional open interest exceeded $200 billion for the first time.

Paul Houston, CME Group’s global head of FX products, said the figures reflected demand among buy-side clients for futures’ capital efficiency, transparency and central clearing. He said clients were using the contracts to manage exposures across both major and emerging-market currency pairs.

The figures were disclosed by CME Group and have not been independently verified by Global Macro News.
