U.S. President Donald Trump commented on ship traffic passing through the Strait of Hormuz and gave Iran 60 days to reach an agreement.
Trump said that approximately 700 ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz and added that Iran must reach an agreement within 60 days. The U.S. President also said that, otherwise, the U.S. would take steps that the Tehran government “would not like.” However, Trump added that he did not believe the situation would escalate to that point.
Pointing out that the Strait of Hormuz is of critical importance for global energy trade, Trump said that any military tension in the region could directly affect the flow of oil. Trump said, “If we do that, oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz will stop immediately. Because people who own ships worth billions of dollars don’t like missiles flying over their heads or waters filled with mines.”
His remarks came at a time when negotiations between the U.S. and Iran are ongoing with the aim of restoring stable use of the Strait of Hormuz and reducing tensions in the region. According to Reuters, Iran announced that, as part of the ongoing talks, it would suspend fees related to the use of the Strait of Hormuz for a period of 60 days.
In the same interview, Trump also commented on domestic politics and the defense industry. Claiming that poll results were very good, Trump asserted that he could defeat any candidate the Democrats field by a 25-point margin.
Speaking about the U.S. military, Trump said that the country possesses the world’s strongest military and most advanced military aircraft, adding that the presidential aircraft must also be “top-tier.” Trump also stated that production of the F-47 fighter jet has begun and that the assembly line has been activated.
Trump also had words of praise for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Describing Hegseth as a “born fighter,” Trump said he is someone who never accepts defeat, has an extremely tough character, and sincerely loves the military.
Referring to the war with Iran, Trump argued that he had ended eight wars during his presidency, noting that the war with Iran was the most difficult among them.
