US Consumer Sentiment Slides to 47.8 in September

US consumer sentiment fell to 47.8 in the preliminary September reading, declining for a second consecutive month. The University of Michigan index came in well below the market expectation of 51.0, signaling renewed caution among households.

Expectations for personal finances and business conditions deteriorated during the survey period. Respondents anticipated greater pressure on household budgets as fuel prices increased and trade tensions added uncertainty to the economic outlook.

US Consumer Sentiment Weakens as Inflation Concerns Return

The decline followed August consumer price data showing headline inflation at 3.4% and a stronger-than-expected 0.3% monthly increase in core prices. Together, the reports suggest consumers are feeling the effects of elevated living costs even as annual core inflation has moderated.

The University of Michigan provides its official consumer survey data and supporting historical series online. The September figure is preliminary and may be revised when the final monthly results are released.

Weak US consumer sentiment does not necessarily translate immediately into lower spending, but a sustained decline could weigh on discretionary purchases and broader growth. Markets will watch retail sales, labor conditions and inflation expectations for confirmation of a meaningful change in household behavior.
