U.S. President Donald Trump made some striking statements regarding the national security debate surrounding the artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic. Speaking to Marc Caputo of Axios, Trump said that following his administration’s recent decision to restrict access to Anthropic’s new model, his administration had at one point viewed the company as a national security threat, but that relations had improved in recent days.
Trump said that while he may have viewed Anthropic as a national security threat a week ago, he noted that sanctions in such cases can be very severe. The U.S. President said, “People get thrown in jail right away for this.” However, Trump signaled that the atmosphere had changed following his discussions with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, describing Amodei as “polite” and “smart.”
According to Axios, tensions had escalated after the Trump administration restricted access to Anthropic’s most advanced AI models by foreign nationals and certain overseas institutions.
In the same interview, Trump also touched on topics such as Iran, Israel, Cuba, and the limits of presidential authority. Regarding Iran, Trump claimed that a war could lead to a global economic depression and argued that the deal he struck prevented that outcome. On the subject of Cuba, when asked whether swift actions similar to those taken against Venezuela might be considered, he replied, “It’s possible,” and noted that Cuba is “almost a neighbor” to the U.S.
In his assessment of Israel, Trump argued that his decision to terminate the Iran nuclear deal reached during the Obama administration was crucial for Israel’s security. When asked about the limits of presidential authority, Trump stated, “There are no limits,” adding that while there may be limits in theory, he did not see them in practice.
