CEO of artificial intelligence company Anthropic, Dario Amodei, argues that governments should have the authority to block the use of new AI models that pose certain risks. In a comprehensive article published on Wednesday, Amodei said that AI models should undergo mandatory independent third-party testing to assess the risks they could pose across various sectors.
Amodei stated that if an AI model is found to pose “unacceptable risks,” governments should have the authority to halt or restrict its use. His statement is considered one of the strongest calls to date by the Anthropic CEO for stricter regulations in the AI sector.
Amodei cited the automotive, aviation, and pharmaceutical industries as examples of sectors where AI technologies are regulated, noting that while these technologies are critical to the modern economy, they could lead to mass casualties if designed or used improperly. Amodei believes AI requires a similar regulatory approach.
Anthropic had previously warned that its AI model, Mythos, had the capability to detect and exploit critical software vulnerabilities. As a result, the company had restricted access to the model to only a limited number of partners. In the new version released this week, however, Anthropic announced that these cyberattack capabilities have been removed.
